TV Dinners: Serving up an eclectic sampling of 101 cooking videos

For people who can’t get enough of cooking—and that would include me—Guide to Culinary Schools has compiled a wonderfully eclectic mix of cooking videos.

The Internet is a wonderful place, chock full of cool stuff. On the other hand, it’s chock full of stuff. So much so that sometimes it’s hard to sift through everything to find what you’re looking for.

The website Guide to Culinary Schools has done some major sifting and come up with a wildly varied mix of 101 cooking videos. The videos range from classic Julia Child to current big names such as Mario Batali and Eric Ripert to goofy bits about baking cookies on your car’s dashboard.

They call their compilation 101 Best Cooking Videos. And while there’s room for discussion of the term best, I think we’ll all agree it’s an interesting mix. Here are a few samples:

Chef Anita Lo of Annisa in New York City gives tips on shopping for fresh fish in Chinatown, then steams it according to her mother’s recipe.

Chef Homaro Cantu explains the experimental molecular gastronomy and weird science behind the whimsical dishes served at his Chicago restaurant moto.

Ninety-something home cook Clara Cannucciari shares simple, inexpensive recipes and stories of the Depression in a series of videos that has now become a book, Clara’s Kitchen: Wisdom, Memories, and Recipes from the Great Depression.

This is just a quick taste of what you’ll find in this fun collection. To explore them all, check out Guide to Culinary Schools’ 101 Best Cooking Videos.

  1. What fun, Terry! As I think you know I am mostly a watch-others-cook person, but I do on occasion let myself be influenced by those who can AND are willing to teach. Thanks for this wonderful video smörgåsbord!

  2. Glad to do it, Ronnie Ann. Even as someone who cooks almost daily, I’m always ready to watch others do it too. Sometimes I watch for techniques and ideas. Sometimes it’s just culinary voyeurism.

  3. I love this post, Terry! I don’t know why I get such satisfaction from reading food blogs and watching other people cook. Maybe it’s because there are zero calories. 😉 There just isn’t enough time that I’m willing to devote to the internet to keep up with everything! Happy National Chocolate Cake Day, by the way!

  4. Dani—Apple launches the iPad, the president delivers his first State of the Union Address and it’s National Chocolate Cake Day?!? I think I have to go lie down.

Altadenahiker—I don’t know. I mean, she seems sweet enough onscreen, but old Depression habits die hard. The first time you cooked something non-frugal, I think she would totally go off on you.
