A neighborhood restaurant that lets you choose your wine, but not your dinner, is the subject of my latest USA Character Approved Blog post.
One of life’s most exquisite little pleasures for me is a neighborhood bistro with steak frites on the menu. Unfortunately, such bistros will often have duck confit, lamb shanks or other alluring carnivorous delights on the menu as well. And then I’m sunk decisionwise. I think I may need to move to our nation’s capital. Medium Rare opened there this spring with a single entree choice on its menu.
Steak. And not a selection of steaks. One steak. Served with frites, some bread and a salad, for under 20 bucks. The wine list is considerably longer, well-curated and reasonably priced, the wines specifically selected to pair well with you-know-what.
Medium Rare pairs all this steak and wine goodness with a relaxed, friendly neighborhood joint atmosphere that makes me wish the neighborhood wasn’t 700 miles from my own. To find out more about Medium Rare, its creators—and the few food-related choices they’ll let you make—check out my latest post on the USA Character Approved Blog.
Nice post and enjoyed reading your post over on the other Blog. I enjoy steak and fries combo. I bet it was yummy along with the atmosphere at this bistro.
Thanks, Cynthia!
after i studied abroad in italy i went to visit my cousin who lives outside paris. i had totally forgotten my birthday (who needs a celebration of turning 21 when wine flowed like water in italy??), but my cousin insisted on taking my out to a restaurant just like Medium Rare. in the paris restaurant, the tables were lined with paper and our order (only how we wanted our steak cooked) was written in front of us for the server to see, since they came around with seconds. to this day it is in the top 5 restaurants i think i have ever been to and i dream about the perfection of their fries. maybe i’ll fly to DC to check this place out, since it’s much closer and cheaper than Paris.
What a wonderful story, Mary! And now I totally want to be eating in that Paris restaurant.
We’re always looking for great restaurants to try. DC is just a short trip away so this will definitely be on our list of places to try. I love fantastic food at great prices! If you’re ever in the Cleveland, OH area you have to try Fat Cats, great prices and amazing food! Thanks for sharing.
I just checked out Fat Cats online, EL&BM. It sounds wonderful—thanks for the tip!
