Celebrating National Scone Day

SO, MAY 30 IS NATIONAL SCONE DAY. There being only so many days in the year, it is also National Creativity Day and National Mint Julep Day. But you know us, we’re happy to celebrate scones.

Scone. Whether you rhyme it with John or with Joan (both are common), there’s just something about the word. It sounds at once homey and comforting, a cozy treat to enjoy with tea by a fire, but also somehow more sophisticated, more elegant than, say, a muffin or biscuit. It also sounds wonderfully plummy and British, even though scones originated in Scotland. Where, by the way, rhyming it with John is the preferred pronunciation.

When done right, a scone is a delicious, not-too-sweet treat—great with tea in the afternoon, of course, but also perfect your morning coffee. Honestly, they’re also something to be simply enjoyed leaning against the kitchen counter, smiling smugly and thinking, “I made this.”

A case in point is Lemon Lavender Scones, pictured above. They are light, lemony and airy, the slightly crisp exterior giving way to a finely crumbed interior. The lavender is a subtle touch, just adding another nice layer. You’ll find the recipe, along with a tip for using lemon extract instead of fresh lemon juice, right here.

Apple Cheddar Scones

THESE APPLE CHEDDAR SCONES straddle savory and sweet. While sharp cheddar cheese, butter and buttermilk (instead of cream) certainly deliver on the savory side, bits of chopped up apple offer plenty hits of sweetness. You’ll find the recipe here.

Walnut and Boozy Cherry Scones

WALNUT AND BOOZY CHERRY SCONES feature dried Montmorency tart cherries, which are plumped with bourbon, then combined with walnuts and baked into easy-to-make, not-too-sweet scones. You’ll find the recipe here.

There are plenty of national something days out there to celebrate. We think National Scone Day is one of the best. We hope you agree!
