Chicago’s Logan Square Kitchen Pastry Market returns with another one-day event of delicious creations by local small-batch pastry artisans, and Chicago’s Downtown Farmstand features a month of events highlighting food grown or produced within 250 miles of Chicago.
Going locavore in Chicago is sweeter than ever these days. In February, we wrote about a pre-Valentine’s Day Pastry Market at Logan Square Kitchen. Well, they’re at it again. This Saturday, April 10, the Logan Square Kitchen Spring Pastry Market will feature a day of pastries, chocolates, caramels, ice cream and more. Most of these treats are not widely available. In fact, many one-of-a-kind items will be created just for this event.
All the vendors featured at this one-day event are local food artisans, most of whom produce their wares in small batches, many producing seasonal items available for only a short time. You can buy treats to take home, but there are also tables scattered throughout the space so you can devour them on the spot. At the last event, we did both.
Some vendors will be baking in the Logan Square Kitchen during the market. Come see a sustainable kitchen in action and see what it takes to create exquisite, delicious pastries and treats. And feel free to ask questions and learn more about the artisans and their craft.
Among the more than a dozen vendors selling their sweet and savory wares this Saturday will be B True Bakery, City Provisions, Fig Catering, Flour Cake and Pastry, Katherine Anne Confections, Rich Chocolates & Candies and Tinycakes.
Admission to the Pastry Market is free, but you’re encouraged to RSVP so vendors can estimate how much to prepare. To RSVP, click here.

Food events at Chicago’s Downtown Farmstand
The city opened the Farmstand in downtown Chicago in October 2008 to showcase locally produced food. Local doesn’t just mean locally grown to them. In addition to sustainably grown fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs in season—including many organic items—Chicago’s Downtown Farmstand features a broad selection of edibles produced not just by artisans and small farmers, but by local favorites like Bays English Muffins too. Every day, a wide range of dairy products, condiments, seasonings, preserves, breakfast favorites, baked goods and other items arrive at their Randolph Street location. In addition to selling local and regional foods, the Farmstand hosts a variety of food-related programs.
Cooking Demonstrations. Every Wednesday this month, the Culinary Programs and Events Division of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs is presenting cooking demonstrations from 11am – 1pm. Dishes will be prepared with products available in the Farmstand that day. Stop by to taste and learn.
Friday Vendor Trunk Shows. Stop by any Friday afternoon in April to meet local food artisans and sample their products. Times vary by week. Tastings include:
April 9, 4:30pm – 6:30pm, Neighborhood-themed caramels from City Caramels
April 16, 3pm – 5pm, Microgreens from the Gary Comer Youth Center
April 23, 12pm – 2pm, Vegan toffee from Chocolate Inspirations
April 30, 12pm – 2pm, Gluten-free sugar cookies from Doodles
Visit the Farmstand website for complete information on their offerings and hours.

Really wishing I lived in Chicago right now! I hope you and Marion have a FABulous weekend, Terry!
Dani—The Pastry Market was a real treat. We did plenty of sampling there and brought home a number of sweets that we’re trying to not just gobble up in one sitting.
