This Saturday, food bloggers across the country are getting together to bake a difference! Specifically, they’ll be holding the first annual National Food Bloggers Bake Sale, part of Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale program, a national effort that encourages individuals to help end childhood hunger by holding bake sales in their communities. Share Our Strength reports that since 2003, more than 1.7 million people have participated in the Great American Bake Sale, presented by Domino Sugar and C&H Sugar, raising nearly $6 million.
According to Share Our Strength, “Nearly 17 million children in America—that’s almost one in four—face hunger. And it’s likely that these children will endure lifelong consequences as a result of having limited access to nutritious foods.” Children who struggle with hunger are sick more often, recover more slowly, and are more likely to be hospitalized. They are more susceptible to obesity and its harmful health consequences as children and as adults. Hunger impedes our children’s ability to learn and perform academically, and it predisposes them to emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Helping is easy—and delicious! Just attend a bake sale in your area and treat yourself to cupcakes and other goodies created by generous food bloggers. The Chicago Bake Sale is being organized by Maris Callahan, author of the blog In Good Taste. It’s being held at Smash Cake Bakery—details are listed below. Share Our Strength is the leading national organization working to make sure no kid in America grows up hungry. They weave together a net of community groups, activists and food programs to catch children at risk of hunger and ensure they have nutritious food where they live, learn and play.
