Two great ways to use extra matzoh (or reasons to buy extra)

Matzoh Crack

PASSOVER IS UPON US (sundown April 22 through April 30) and that means matzoh is readily available in many stores. For us, that means it’s time for two of our favorite recipes, matzoh crack and matzoh brei.

During Passover, those who celebrate cannot eat leavened bread. Matzoh (matzo, matzah, matza) is an unleavened flatbread that is part of Jewish cuisine, made with flour, water, salt and maybe a little olive oil. The matzoh you find in stores is crispy, like oversized crackers. This improves its shelf life, which is good, because you sometimes find yourself with a good amount of leftover matzoh. Here are two delicious ways to use it.

The dangerously delicious Passover dessert Matzoh Crack, shown above, is sweet, salty, crunchy and definitely addictive. Our version includes semisweet chocolate, white chocolate, chopped nuts and spicy rose sugar. Trust us, make an extra batch for yourself.

Matzoh Brei

For matzoh brei, you tame matzoh’s crunchiness with a little warm water, milk or even sweet wine. This simple egg-based breakfast dish can be served with jams or powdered sugar or honey or maple syrup for a sweet treat. Or it can be a savory dish akin to chilaquiles, topped with warm salsa, avocado, cilantro and melty cheese. You’ll find our recipe and variations right here.
